Hemp has become a popular plant since it was legalized by the government to grow, process, possess, and distribute in Thailand. As global demand is forecasted to rise constantly, it will pave the way for hemp to become a new cash crop for Thai farmers, the community, and the economy. In this article, we will introduce you to each part of hemp and their application.
1. Roots – can be processed for the extracts for medical usage, cosmetic products, soap, and body scrub powder.
2. Hurds Hemp or Shives Hemp [3] – can be used for textile and rope industry like linen and hemp fiber. Also, it can be used for cosmetic products, body scrub cream, soap, and shampoo.
3. Inner Stalks – can be used for making paper pulp.
4. Cores – as their absorbing water or oil properties can be used as biomass energy i.e., charcoal, alcohol, ethanol, and methanol. Besides, it can be used for building decoration and furniture production.
5. Leaves – can be used in the production of food and beverage industry i.e., herbal tea, beer, wine, supplement powder, and mixture powder for pasta, pastry, or bakery production. Moreover, in the cosmetic industry the leaves can be extracted to scented oil and become a useful ingredient for its skin moisturized and skin protection properties.
6. Seeds [4] – seeds are full of numerous nutrients as so-called “Superfood”. Many researchers found that it has a very high amount of omega-3 and other nutrients i.e., omega-6, omega-9, linoleic acid, alpha and gamma-linolenic acid, and vitamin E. These helps prevent cardiovascular disease and reduce the incidence of cancer.
7. Seed oils – can be used as an ingredient to produce bleach, soap, cosmetics, sunscreen, shampoo, body lotion, lipstick, lip balm, face mask, or even gasoline. Furthermore, it is used to develop the original CBD oil cream for dry skin and Psoriasis.
Other than oil, it is found that there is a high protein contained in seed oil which can be used in the production of butter, cheese, tofu, plant protein, ice cream, salad dressing, snacks, and supplements. In addition, it could be used as a substitute for GMO plants, soy, to make flour in the near future.
8. Flowers – this part of hemp has the highest Cannabidiol, CBD extract. This extract, also called “CBD oil”, has a multitude of uses in the production of medicinal, supplements, cosmeceuticals, and animal feeds.
